The Power of the Mind

The Power of the Mind is a curious phenomenon because it is so potent and yet so difficult to control. We find ourselves thinking a certain way, knowing that a particular thought may be creating trouble for us and yet we find it difficult to stop. For example, many people have the experience of getting sick at the same time every year or every time they go on a plane. Even though they are aware that their beliefs impact their experiences, they continue to think they will get sick and so then they inevitably do so. This pattern repeats itself continually and so becomes a vicious circle.

Sometimes we actually need to get sick in order to process something or move something through our bodies. However, we often become ill, or feel exhausted because we feel we cannot make the effort to galvanize the power of our minds in the service of our physical health, which is one of its most important functions. We really do have the ability to use it to communicate to our bodies, yet we often regard the two as separate entities that have little to do with one another.

One of the most obvious ways that the mind has power over the body can be seen with the placebo effect. The placebo effect occurs when a treatment or medication with no known therapeutic value is administered to a patient and the patient's symptoms improve. The patient believes and expects that the treatment is going to work, so it does.

The power of the mind can and does affect everything in the body, frequently producing chemical changes that we have believed were possible only through the use of most powerful drugs. However, the action of mind in the body always follows exact law.  So when you begin to understand the exact physical effect produced by each mental state, bodily manifestations can often be determined by the intelligent use of the mind.

Personality can be refined through the exercise of the right mental action in the body, and as this is being done, the joy of physical existence will increase correspondingly. The tendency to disease, weakness and physical in harmony will decrease, while the personality will become an increasingly perfect instrument through which the limitless possibilities of the great within may be expressed.

"We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves." ~ Buddha
